Where were you in 2012?

FX Networks aired This is the End (2013) on Wednesday, July 15, 2015. This flick boasts an all-star comedy cast of Seth Rogen, Jonah Hill, Craig Robinson, Danny McBride, Jay Baruchel, and James Franco. Everything starts out innocent enough at a house party, with cameo appearances by Michael Cera and Rihanna, when all of a sudden, space aliens decide to attack and destroy the planet! The dialogue and storyline is what we have come to expect from Seth and James, and Jonah. The major difference between this flick and Pineapple Express is that this comedy has special effects, alien saucers beaming down on earthlings, houses were exploding, and there was even a demonic possession! I wanted to see this movie for quite some time. However, I always felt its release in 2013 was a bit late. If it were released a few months earlier, it probably could have had more ticket sales, feeding off excitement from the highly anticipated Apocalypse of 2012. By the way, these special effects were not scary; they were something to laugh at. It’s hard to place this flick, is it science fiction or a stoner film? Either way, This is the End is a strange brew, and it’s not one that I can recommend.

Truth or Dare to the Extreme

On Friday, June 10, 2015, I logged onto Netflix and decided to watch Truth or Die (2012). In this British thriller, two young men and two young women are invited to a remote cabin, for a night of heavy partying. Instead of having fun, they encounter a psychopath, avenging his brother’s death. This flick, which was originally titled Truth or Dare, takes the game with the same name, to a whole new level. If I were a contestant, I wouldn’t know which to pick because either way, you lose! And it won’t be pleasant. I was not dissatisfied with Truth or Die, its right up my alley for entertainment splendor. If you enjoy watching people go into the woods, just to get picked off one by one, you will like this one.

Nothing to Scream about

Wes Craven reinvented horror movies, when he introduced us to Freddy Krueger in Nightmare on Elm Street (1984). He also reinvigorated the genre with Ghostface, in Scream (1996). MTV is continuing the tradition of terror, on Tuesday nights with an all new series titled Scream, based on the movie franchise. I must say I was not exactly impressed with the series premiere on June 30, 2015. I appreciate that the characters and dialogue attempt to stay consistent with the original films. But the show loses identity, being set in an upper class, socially elite, well to do, wealthy community instead of a small town. There’s also a lake! What is this? Friday the 13th? The new Ghostface mask is different too. And no way near as scary as the original, iconic Ghostface. I am a big fan of the flicks, so I would like to see this TV series succeed, but they might need to make a few changes.

I have heard a lot of hoopla about The Human Centipede (First Sequence) (2009), over the years. My friend, who barely has time for movies, recently told me they were up to Part III, in the franchise. I knew nothing about the films, so when I heard it was about three people connected from anus to mouth, I was instantly intrigued. I’m being a bit sarcastic, by the way. After a couple months of acquiring this knowledge, I finally got to see the first installment on Netflix, on Saturday, July 4, 2015. I found it to be a rather disturbing film. That’s all I will say for now. I’m almost speechless. I don’t want to give away too much. I will say the flick had a happy ending. I hope I didn’t ruin it for anyone.
