Heroes is Reborn after a 5 year hiatus

The original Heroes aired on NBC from 2006 to 2010. The series met an unexpected end when the network decided to not order another season. It was rumored that Heroes was too expensive to produce so it was cancelled. I can imagine. Every episode was like a mini movie. The special effects were awesome. The settings were breath-taking. The story-line was superb. The action and fight scenes were high in supply. Myself, along with many other fans, were shocked when the series was not renewed.

But after five years of much prayer and plenty of fan mail, the spin-off, Heroes Reborn returned on Thursday, September 24, 2015. It was excellent. It is like nothing has changed. They basically picked up where they left off five years ago as far as special effects, settings, and action and fight scenes are concerned. I’m so stoked. However, not all of the original cast members are back. Many have gone on to bigger and better things. I believe Zachary Quinto is busy on Broadway. Can you blame him?

I must also mention that, since I followed the original series closely, I’m not sure how a new viewer will take to this new upgrade. There are many references to the original Heroes that may leave new viewers wondering. But hopefully the newbies can catch up and enjoy this reboot for all its attributes. By the way, there is a lot of competition for viewers on Thursday evenings with rival networks. I just hope this new series, lasts as many seasons as did the original show, if not longer. In the meantime, may the Heroes save the World!

Hellraiser 9 is a complete waste of time

It was a Sunday afternoon, September 20, 2015, as I sat on my couch. With the approach of my favorite month (October) approaching, I hoped Netflix could satisfy my horror movie hunger. As I scrolled the selections from left to right, then right to left, I couldn’t find anything that said ‘Watch me’. Then I started feeling nostalgic, so I looked up one of my favorite slashers, and then I realized that I never viewed the ninth installment of Hellraiser!

In Hellraiser: Revelations (2011), two college friends are having a wild night out in a Mexican cantina, when they discover a puzzle box. They opened the puzzle box, and unwittingly unleashed Hell! After disappearing for a period of months, their relatives decide to have a family get together, where one of the young men mysteriously reappears. He brought with him some unexpected guests.

Going into this flick, I had my reservations. For starters, there’s a new Pinhead! How could they replace Doug Bradley? He’s truly one of a kind. Secondly, this is part 9. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a part 9 of anything. My intuition was right, because this movie was a letdown.

This new Pinhead is no comparison to the original. He’s not even scary and definitely not worthy of donning the Pinhead mask. This movie was even boring to watch. The whole flick takes place in two places: a bar and a house. This is a bad movie and an even worse Hellraiser movie. Revelations is easily the worst Hellraiser movie ever! The only thing revealed in Revelations is the fact that the studio could release a Hellraiser movie that will make any Hellraiser fan forget that they were a Hellraiser fan.

Rest in Peace Wes Craven

The world suffered a great loss on Sunday, August 30, 2015, as we learned of the passing of Wes Craven. This maestro of the macabre has been shocking audiences since his directorial debut, The Last House on the Left, back in 1972. As I’ve mentioned in past posts, he reinvented horror with A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) and even reinvigorated the genre with Scream (1996). Few people have made such an impact, in slasher films, as did Mr. Craven. I can remember, as a young lad, watching the first Nightmare, shortly after its release. It was ground breaking. There was nothing else like it at the time. And I was so exhilarated when Wes returned to the big screen with the Scream franchise. While doing research for this post, I discovered that Craven directed a whole handful of other fine films, which I wasn’t even aware of! The list is so long, I don’t even know where to begin. I will just say this: His legacy began before I was even born. But I’m glad to enjoy his work for the last 30 years. He was only 76 years old.
